Situation Brief

The world is beginning to heat up.

The Ukraine war continues on.

Once again the Middle East is on the brink of a wider conflict.

Away from all the press reports, news bulletins and social media looms a far more insidious threat to the United States.

The world has seen what happens to “failed states” before. Somalia, Libya, Syria, Iraq, Afghanistan. The list goes on, every example a conflict zone where global powers struggle to assert positions of power usually to control the export of the country’s natural resources or material wealth.

Venezuela has the world’s largest oil reserve. It has significant natural deposits of petroleum, natural gas, gold and diamonds.

In recent years China has invested heavily in Venezuelan infrastructure, Russia continues to offer funding for the processing and export of natural gas.

Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro clings to power. For 13 years he has reigned as the countries President, although most governments consider him a dictator. With elections looming this is the first election where the opposition have a real chance of winning.

The average citizen is unhappy, unemployment has risen sharply of the years and the economy is failing. Water is now more expensive than Gasoline and the threat of violent civil rest is real.

The United States watches Venezuela closely.

Langley has recently identified the Cargo ship Artemis in port at Venezuela. The ship has previously been suspected of smuggling Russian weapons into Syria. Now it resides in a Venezuelan port.

The United States administration has approved the deployment of the Special Activities Division to convert investigate and gather intelligence from the port.
